Most people come to Sanibel Island to visit the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. This pristine area is meant to help protect the many wonderful species of plants, mammals, and birds that live within its borders. President Harry S. Truman signed an order creating the refuge in 1945, and it has thrived ever since. There are many different kinds of birds at the refuge, and the best months to visit in order to see the most animals are between December and March. There is a wonderful education center at the refuge as well, where visitors can look at exhibits and learn more about the animals and their natural habitat. In addition, there is the Wildlife Drive, which is the refuge's public access road. It allows people to drive through the island and see the beauty from the comfort of their vehicles. The drive is closed every Friday. While on Sanibel Island, be sure to check out the Big Arts building which is home to all kinds art forms, from paintings to live performances. There are also workshops and an annual art fair that are held there each year.
Since Sanibel Island has a personality all its own, visitors are highly recommended to check out the Sanibel Historical Village and Museum. Here, you can get a hands-on experience of what it was like on the Island many years ago.
