Saint Petersburg, Florida is a very popular tourist destination with a population of about one quarter of one million people. The city got its name from its Russian sister city, and founder Peter Demens named it as such since he spent much of his youth in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The city is home to the first airline which flew from there to Tampa and back in 1914. Today, the city thrives with a booming city environment and large tourist income. Famous residents include Billy Corgan of the band the Smashing Pumpkins, actress Angela Bassett, and famous beatnik writer Jack Kerouac. When visiting Saint Petersburg, you cannot miss the Salvador Dali Museum. This wonderful museum houses many works of the very famous Spanish surrealist. It is certainly a visit you will never forget. Be sure to also visit the Sunken Garden which has some of the oldest tropical plants in the area. These beautiful gardens contain many rare and hard to find plants, and will take you on a journey through some of the most beautiful botanical gardens in all of Florida. Saint Petersburg is affectionately known as "St. Pete." While there, get the full experience of this glorious city by taking a walk along the St.Pete Pier. The pier has wonderful shopping, dining, and things to do, all along the beautiful downtown waterfront. There is an aquarium, fishing pier, restaurants, and plenty of unique shops to keep your and your family entertained for at least a full day, if not more.
