Pompano Beach

The city of Pompano Beach, Florida was settled around 1900, and became an official city in 1908. It got its name from the pompano, which is actually a fish that is commonly seen in the waters of the surrounding area. The city just got its first official mayor in 2004! Currently, Pompano Beach is undergoing many huge projects to encourage more visitors and residents. The city itself boasts a laid back approach, and loves to focus on its lovely shorelines. During the summer months, the population typically increases by as much as 50,000 people! While in the area, be sure to see if there are any live acts playing at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater. This large stadium style venue holds about 26,000 people and hosts national live musical acts and tons of fun. Orchestra and opera events are also common. Every year, the city hosts an annual fishing rodeo. This large fishing tournament attracts fishermen (and women!) from all over the country to come and test out their fishing skills. It brings spectators and fans alike from different areas to come and watch these master fishermen try their hand at catching the largest and most fish possible. Another fun event is the Pompano Beach Seafood Festival where everyone comes out to try out some of the latest and best seafood dishes. There are cooking contests, fresh fish markets, activities for the kids, and local vendors selling all kinds of great souvenirs and other items of interest.
