Fernandina Beach
The city of Fernandina Beach, Florida, was originally called Napoyca by the Native Americans who lived there. In 1562, a French explorer named Jean Ribault became the first European visitor to land there. Eventually, the Spanish settled in and began to hang their flag there, but in 1763, Great Britain came in and flew its flag. The quarrel for this beautiful piece of land continued for many years until it was finally settled by the British American soldiers. The city earned the nickname the "isle of 8 flags," since eight different national flags had flown there at one time or another. The city of Fernandina Beach is the home of the modern shrimping industry, and shrimp boats can be seen patrolling the waters almost all year long. Fernandina Beach is also home to the state of Florida's oldest saloon, located on Centre Street, which was established during the time of the Civil War and still stands there today. Amelia Island is a beautiful little island just off the shores of Fernandina Beach. For vistors, the Amelia Island Museum of History is a must see. It offers many exhibits as well as lectures, ghost tours, walking tours, and much more. There is a lot to do on Fernandina Beach, and most of it is related to the beautiful beach environment. Things such as bird watching, fishing, biking, swimming, and boating are just a few of the wonderful activities here.
Of course, since Fernandina Beach is situated right on the water, there is a great deal of excellent seafood restaurants to choose from. Brett's Waterway Café Incorporated is one of the area's most popular choices, and offers a beautiful view with upscale dining. Of course, there are many other casual and different styles of restaurants to choose from as well. If shopping is what you enjoy, try the Fernandina Farmer's Market which is open every single Saturday except the first Saturday in May, when the town begins its annual shrimp festival. The farmer's market has a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, preserves, flowers, pastries, and lots more to choose from. It makes for a great day of shopping, enjoying the scenery, and meeting the locals. Of course, no beautiful beach city would be complete without golf courses. Fernandina Beach has several excellent courses to choose from, including their largest which is the Amelia Island Plantation, offering 18 holes of award winning golf. For those interested in the environment, there are many different eco tours available that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Fort Clinch State Park features miles of bike trails, camping, fishing, picnic areas, and tours of the historic fort itself. There are also candlelight tours and a wonderful gift shop. Fernandina Beach is a quiet and tight knit community with a lot of wonderful things to offer. For those who want to travel to Florida and go off the beaten path, then Fernandina Beach is definitely the way to go for a guaranteed relaxing time.
