Everglades
The Everglades in Florida is one of the United State's most precious natural resources. The area covers a huge amount of precious land and water at the southern tip of the state. The Everglades National Park was developed to allow tourists to see the beauty of its natural resources, while educating people on its preservation. Air boat tours are a common sight in the Everglades. While this is a fun excursion and an adventurous thing to do, many feel that the over use of these airboats has contributed to the pollution and destruction of the Everglades. The area covers all the way from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay. Unfortunately only 25% of the original Everglades landscape remains. Currently the rest is the subject of a battle to keep it thriving, and keep the home to the various species of wildlife that live there safe and thriving. Alligators are a very common site in the Everglades. Many tours take travelers through areas where wild alligators live and roam. Many other interesting animals live within the Everglades including owls, egrets, ducks, a huge variety of fish, raccoons, muskrats, even bobcats! Turtles are also a very common sight. Whether you live in Florida or you are just visiting, you can get involved in helping to preserve the beautiful Everglades. There are many different organizations dedicated to its survival, including the CERP, or Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.
For those of you visiting the Everglades in Florida, there is much to do. The Everglades Alligator Farm is a great place to start. The farm provides all kinds of entertainment for kids of all ages and adults. The airboat rides are of course the popular favorite, giving visitors an "insider's look" at the natural habitat of many beautiful plants and animals. The airboat ride is a lot of fun, and the Everglades Alligator Farm is sure to use only a certain designated trail in order to preserve the remaining waterways. Aside from airboat rides, there are snake and alligator shows, where you can learn about the different species of these interesting animals. When the show is over, you can get your picture taken holding a snake or even maybe a baby alligator! This makes for an unforgettable souvenir. The Redland Trail is also a lot of fun, and features a great variety of things to do such as visit the monkey jungle, try some exotic fruit smoothies, look at some of the most beautiful wild orchids in the state of Florida, see the world famous Coral Castle, try a fine wine at the winery, and enjoy the beautiful bonsai garden and fruit and spice park. The Everglades are an important part of the earth's ecosystem. There are many rare species of plants and animals living there, and each year more and more acres are destroyed by tourism and greed. While the Everglades are a fun and beautiful place to visit, it's important to remember to respect them and try to learn as much as possible about what can be done to ensure that the Everglades will be there for future generations to enjoy.
